[세배] : 설날 어른들에게 드리는 새해 인사

[New Year’s bow (Saebae)]: A special way of greeting adults on New Year’s day.

설빔을 입고 어른들에게도 절을 하는데, 이 풍습을 세배라고 합니다. 세배는 살아계신 어른들에게 존경과 건강을 기원하는 풍습입니다.

We bow to adults wearing HanBok, and this custom is called ‘Saebae’.

Saebae is a custom of wishing respect and health for living adults.

[ 새해 인삿말 ] : "새해 복 많이 받으세요[sae-hae bok ma-ni ba-deu-se-yo]”

세배를 받은 어른들은 그 답례로 한해를 잘 보내라는 뜻으로 덕담과 세뱃돈을 줍니다. 아이들에겐 집안에 어른들이 많을수록 세뱃돈이 많아지니 더욱 설날이 행복해 집니다.

After receiving New Year’s greetings, adults give words of blessing and cash gifts in return for children’s good year. For children, the more adults in the house, the more cash they earn.
